As I sit down to write this, we are experiencing a slightly lower-than-normal temperature outside. It got down to around 40F this morning (21 February!) Needless to say, I was a tad worried about my garden.
A few weeks ago, I planted an array of vegetables and herbs. Here’s what I got in the ground and in pots:
- A variety of pepper plants and one survivor from last year! Habanero is my favorite.
- Onion bulbs – I have tried growing these from seed, but for whatever reason I hesitated to thin out the harvest. The result was a boatload of underdeveloped onions. This year I decided to go with bulbs and plant them 6” apart.
- Tomatoes. Lots of tomatoes. I have three plants that produce fruits the size of cocoa puffs, Roma, Beefcake, Purple, etc. The small tomatoes are packed full of flavor but are a pain to pick. I end up dropping half of them.
- Romaine lettuce. The trick here is to plant them close together so they support each other. Harvest frequently by cutting off the outer leaves.
- Spearmint, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme! Really! Also, basil and dill.
- Purple cabbage.
- A lot of carrots by seed
- Nine papaya trees!
- Six banana plants
- A cinnamon tree
- Coconut palm tree
- Avocado tree
- Three guava trees
I can’t even imagine all of this in my small yard!
Everything looks to have survived the cold weather, and I’ll begin regular watering soon. Everything is properly fertilized and fed. Let’s hope for a great crop this year!
